North49 sledge hammer
The body of this sledge is made up of 12 layers of wrought iron and 6 layers of 15N20. The faces were rough forged from 1046 then milled to fit the body in a tongue and groove fashion. The faces are pinned from the sides with 1/4" 1018 round which locks them mechanically over and above the forge weld. The final weight of the sledge is 9.5lbs. It measures 6 3/8" long with 2 1/4" x 2 3/8" faces. I shaped the faces similar to a rounding hammer ( one flat and one convex) although the "rounded" face isn't as aggressive as you would see on a hand hammer. It's hung on a purpleheart over hickory laminated handle with a walnut wedge. The finished length is 33".
