The forge
The shop has gone through a number of changes since being built in 2016. Originally, a small lever operated rivet forge occupied the corner of the shop. As things have expanded, so too has our forge. The main workhorse of Small Bar Smithy is now this brick masonry forge which was constructed in the fall of 2019. We use blacksmith coke in the main forge which is a refined coal product. The shop also has several traditional coal forges and one propane gas forge.
The Classroom area
2019 was an incredibly busy year in the shop. Not only did we complete the traditional brick forge build, we also established a designated classroom area. This area will be a three season (spring, summer and fall) workshop, and has two permanent coal forges along with all of the tooling and equipment to accommodate 4-6 students. These forges are operated with hand crank blowers giving this area of the shop a nostalgic feel.
